Saturday mornings are my favorite – personally and for documentary photography. Waking up a bit late, cooking a full delicious breakfast and then just spending quality time with the family is the best.
I spent Saturday following this family around their home while the kids played, ran from room to room, hosted a very serious tea party, climbed on the swings, and generally forgot there was a camera there. We had a great time – genuine interactions require people to feel comfortable and at ease – this is my specialty.
Documentary family photography isn’t about finding the cleanest wall in the house or getting everyone into the same pose. I’m looking for layers, relationships, little gestures, the way a home feels, and all of the wonderfully ordinary things that will eventually become very specific memories.
The toy kitchen in the corner. Bare feet on the floor. A child disappearing through a doorway. Mom sitting down at their level. Dad getting pulled into the game. The kind of photographs that may become more important with every year that passes.
These are just a handful of the images produced for this family. Typically a session generates anywhere from 50-90 images. I keep it under 100 because it becomes a bit overwhelming for a client to go through them all and digest their favorites. The more curated results, the better.
